It's Staff Sgt. Edgar Covarrubias' second Fourth of July in Iraq. No family barbecue, no fireworks, but Covarrubias says he'll call his mom, wife and kids to share the day anyway. Across Iraq, America's Independence Day was a normal work day for most U.S. troops.
DOD has now set standards for how individual services will offer conduct waivers to those it recruits. The new policy standardizes how the Army and other services classify offenses, how many offenses a recruit may have committed before requiring a waiver, and in what combination those offenses may have been committed.
More than 60 family members who shared the loss of Navy and Army special operations personnel, during Operation Redwings in Afghanistan three years ago, met in San Diego, June 27, at Naval Special Warfare Command.

For 10 years, Capt. Christopher Joyce has carried the memory of Senior Master Sgt. James Caniford around his wrist. Sergeant Caniford, a former 16th Special Operations Squadron illuminator operator, was recently identified after more than 30 years listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War.

Coast Guard crewmembers conducted back-to-back rescues around Point Judith, R.I. Coast Guard Station Point Judith in Narragansett, R.I., first responded to a call from the Narragansett police department reporting a person had fallen overboard.
